RSGIS Research Group @ the Scientific Event on Wildfires in Chios

Assistant Professor Christos Vasilakos participated in the scientific event titled “Wildfires in Chios: The University of the Aegean stands present for a better future”, organized by the University of the Aegean on Wednesday, October 15.

The event was held in response to the devastating wildfires that once again affected Chios, aiming to provide scientifically grounded and accessible information to the public about the multifaceted aspects of natural hazard management, with a particular focus on forest fires.

During the session, university experts discussed strategies for risk assessment, environmental monitoring, and the institutional use of the University’s scientific expertise by local authorities to promote sustainable recovery and prevention policies.

Dr. Vasilakos presented and showcased four custom-built fire management web applications, developed jointly with Mr. Stelios Tzannis, designed specifically to support the agencies of Chios Island in monitoring, assessing, and managing wildfire risks through advanced geospatial and remote sensing technologies.
