Christos Vasilakos is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Geography, University of the Aegean. He is an Environmental Scientist with a Ph.D. in Fire Risk Assessment, specializing in GIS, Remote Sensing, and Neural Networks. From 1999 to 2000, he collaborated as a GIS specialist with the Forest Research Institute of the National Agricultural Research Foundation. In 2000, he was appointed an external researcher at the National Observatory of Athens as part of the THEMA project, with a portion of his work conducted at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Germany. Since 2002, he has been affiliated with the University of the Aegean, where he has worked as a Senior Research Scientist on 13 research projects funded by the EU, Greece, and private-sector initiatives. His research primarily focuses on geoinformatics and artificial intelligence applications in wildfire management and other domains. His main research interests include Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Artificial Intelligence, Natural Hazards, and Geo-informatics Applications. In 2024, he was awarded an MSc in Precision Farming, a joint degree from the Hellenic Open University and the University of Patras. Since 2014, he has taught various courses in Geo-Informatics (including Remote Sensing, GIS, and Photogrammetry) at the Department of Geography and supervises undergraduate and postgraduate theses. He is the author and co-author of more than 60 scientific articles and book chapters. Additionally, he has served as a peer reviewer for several international scientific journals in the field of Geo-Informatics and has been invited to act as an evaluator for several Greek and EU projects.
