The Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Science (RSGIS) Research Group of the Department of Geography, University of the Aegean proudly participated in the Mediterranean Researchers’ Night – MEDNIGHT 2025!
In the morning, we welcomed six school classes from across Lesvos to the Department’s facilities, engaging students with hands-on activities and interactive demonstrations. In the afternoon, we opened our doors at Sapfous square, Mytilene, to multiple visitors of all ages, sharing the work of our research group through presentations, videos, interactive games, a stereoscope, and augmented reality applications.
Our activities highlighted the importance of remote sensing and its applications in understanding and managing both the natural and human-made environment. The event provided a unique opportunity for young learners, educators, and the general public to explore how geospatial technologies and innovative research can address real-world challenges in the Mediterranean region and beyond.
More specificaly, we presented a video of our groups’ activities.
We also present a video demonstration showcasing the comparison between RGB imagery and thermal imagery of a hot spring. The visualization highlights how thermal remote sensing enhances our ability to detect and analyze temperature variations that are not visible in standard optical images. This approach demonstrates the power of combining different types of remote sensing data to better understand natural phenomena and monitor environmental processes.
Moreover, we presented our collection of educational games and interactive activities on remote sensing, designed to engage participants of all ages. Through playful exploration, visitors discovered how satellites and sensors help us study the Earth’s surface, monitor environmental change, and better understand the relationship between the natural and human-made environment. Our application is online and can be found here.
